Skim vs. Whole Milk Which One Is Better?

You might be surprised to learn that the best option for your and your family when it comes to dairy might not, in fact, be skim. We spoke with Tammy Lakatos Shames and Lyssie Lakato, registered dietitian nutritionists and personal trainers with 15 years of experience helping thousands of clients, to find out their thoughts on the skim vs whole milk debate. Here’s what they had to say!

“When it comes to skim vs. whole milk, the answer is not as simple as once thought. For most Americans who get far too much saturated fat (and calories for that matter) choosing low-fat milk is what we recommend and is healthier for them. For someone who doesn’t get much saturated fat, having a little bit in milk won’t hurt them, and we’d say it’s ok to for them to have whole milk in their coffee if they prefer it. However, substituting those saturated fat calories with polynunsaturated fat (found in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds and fatty fish) provides a greater benefit because doing so actually reduces risk of heart disease. At this time, we recommend that most Americans choose low-fat milk and get their fat sources from the polyunsaturated fats to lower their risk of heart disease. However, if someone doesn’t get much saturated fat in their diet (or they’re trying to get pregnant—as some research shows full-fat dairy products may help with fertility) and does get the heart-healthy oils, having a small amount of whole milk if they prefer it is fine. Long story short—our recommendations vary depending on the person’s overall quality of the diet.”
