The China Study

the-china-studyA groundbreaking book with implications for diet, weight loss, and long-term health

It’s startling that despite all that we know about health today and despite the fact that we live in a diet-crazed world, there are still 2/3 of adults suffering from obesity and an increasing amount of children being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes (typically “an adult” disease). Since its debut, The China Study has sold more than 500,000 copies and it’s the largest comprehensive study of human nutrition ever conducted. It was launched via a partnership between Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine and the book is focused on elucidated the groundbreaking research that was done to help us all have an optimal diet for long-term health.

At 400-plus pages it’s quite the book, but after watching a recent interview with Bill Clinton on CNN where he described how he completely overhauled his lifestyle after following the diet outlined in this book we knew it was worthy of a cover-to-cover read. It’s important to note however that The China Study is not a diet book, but rather it’s focused on explaining the connection between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and caner. Moreover it examines the source of confusion that result from lobbyists, government entities, and opportunistic scientists, all of which make for an enlightening and, at times, disturbing read.

Changing your diet can be daunting, but hearing about how Bill Clinton helped reverse his heart disease (yes reverse!), with nutrition is nothing if not inspiring. The key (if we were to pick the major one from the insight-filled book!), is to eat less animal-based foods and more plant-based ones because there are practically no nutrients in animal-based foods that are not better provided by plants. Recipe for a green juice? Right this way….

Dish with us: Would you ever consider ditching animal for plant-based protein?
