Fitness trainer extraordinaire Stephanie Levinson recently hosted a workshop at one of the Sports Club/LA locations in Manhattan where she took students through a workout she developed specifically with women’s “problem areas” in mind. She then hosted a Q+A to hit home some important takeaways that we thought would be beneficial to share.

The key to Levinson’s workout and to getting (and staying!) in shape is high intensity interval training. Levinson says that women should make at least two of their cardio workouts per week interval based where “you really push your body towards or beyond 75-80% of your V02 max. Study after study has proven that interval type workouts are the most effective way to burn calories, improve cardiovascular capacity, and increase your body’s ability to utilize fats during all workouts. So what exactly does interval training mean? Take for example running. To turn a steady run into an interval-based workout run as fast as you can for 30 seconds and then do a slow jog/walk for one minute. Repeat this at least five times.

Another important point made by Levinson is that it’s essential to change your workouts. “Your body is the master adapter,” she says, so to truly change it (and to fight off boredom!), try to switch up your workout routine as often as you can. Lastly, don’t be afraid of weights – muscle tissue require much more energy (i.e. calories), than fat tissue and unless you’re drinking protein shakes and popping protein tablets like there’s no tomorrow, training with weights won’t instantly bulk up your body like some myths have suggested.

If you’re looking for some interval inspiration, you can email Stephanie at for more information on her line of DVDs.
