Top 10 Organic Coffees

By now most of us are aware of the health, taste, and environmental benefits of organic foods. Organic coffee however is still a growing area and many people are unaware of the benefits of a cup of organic Joe.

A few years ago for a biggie wedding anniversary, we went to Alain Ducasse’s Adour in New York City and finished off our decadent tasting menu with a cup of organic Nicaraguan coffee. No exaggeration, it was the best cup of coffee we ever tasted (thank goodness because it was $10!).

Organic coffee is grown using methods and materials with low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, avoid the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. We need a lot of coffee to get us through most of our days, so it’s no stretch for us to consider organic coffee the single most valuable organic product in our pantry - especially when you consider that it’s the organic brands that consistently score the highest when it comes to taste.

Here are our picks for the top 10 best organic coffee brands.

1. Beantrees Organic Coffee Company (Sacramento, CA)

2. Green Mountain Coffee (Waterbury, VT)

3. Equator Estate Coffees & Teas (San Rafael, CA)

4. Chiapas Farms (Austin, TX)

5. Ruta Maya Organic Coffee (Austin, TX)

6. Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Company (Burnaby, BC, Canada)

7. Golden Valley Farms Coffee Roasters (West Chester, PA)

8. S&D Coffee (Concord, NC)

9. Caffe Ibis (Logan, UT)

10. Sun Coffee Roasters (Plainville, CT)

I’m all for organic, but I don’t think any health benefits to eating organic have conclusively been shown. Organic is DEFINITELY better for the health of farm workers and their families (especially children) but I think the jury’s still on on whether it’s better for the consumer.
