Gaiam

Effective resistance training

As women we’re programmed to think “cardio cardio cardio” when it comes to our fitness routine, but the truth is resistance training is just as important. And no, you won’t bulk up. It is true, as we learned firsthand from Tracy Anderson however, that lifting heavy weights does not age well meaning that if you have a body that is prone to “bulking up,” it’s best to opt for body weight and low resistance work. With that in mind we love this Balance Ball from Gaiam.

The lightweight ball is a travel-friendly and [...]

Walkers Shortbread

The new gluten free line you need to know about

Who doesn’t love the taste of a butter cookie crumbling in their mouth? Pair it with a hot cup of tea and the waistline guilt is mitigated by all those feel good antioxidants! Now we can nosh even more confidently thanks to Walkers Shortbread, who for the first time in 116 years has adapted its traditional shortbread recipe and is now offering its first-ever Gluten Free Shortbread. It’s not easy to go gluten-free, but the effect - even when not eliminated completely - is quite staggering (we’re talking everything from less bloating to clearer skin). We’re not saying these cookies are healthy, but if you’re going to be snacking on cookies anyway, why not make them [...]

Beauty Rituals You Should Continue Year Round

Don’t let up when it comes to these musts

Let’s face it, now that the motivation of tiny bikinis and warm summer afternoons has passed, our normal beauty routine tends fall behind. However, regardless if you’re hitting the slopes or in hibernation mode it’s crucial you keep up with a few beauty rituals regularly. Here’s a look at three musts according to the experts.

  • Don’t Skimp on Sunscreen. Don’t be fooled by lower temperatures, overcast skies or rainy days. UV rays are just as strong when hitting the slopes as they are on the beach. “The easiest way to prevent sun damage and protect your skin is to apply an SPF of at least 30 every day - not to mention, look younger. Reapplying every 2 hours if in the sun is critical as well” says Dr. Nussbaum, Dermatologist and Brand Spokesperson for Sebamed.
  • Use Hair Masks Regularly. Do you color your hair, straighten it a few times a week or use a lot of hair spray? Adding chemicals, applying heat or using products are habits that we all find hard to kick, and can come with some unwanted side effects. Anna Urban, CEO of AVIVA notes that “you should be applying a hair mask like Aviva’s Hair Rescue Renewal Masque 1-2 times per week to repair damage and restore elastic, while replenishing the moisture which often depletes from dry summer heat and the cold winter air.”
  • Wax Even Through Winter. Let’s face it, as the temperature drop [...]

Skim vs. Whole Milk Which One Is Better?

We ask the experts

You might be surprised to learn that the best option for your and your family when it comes to dairy might not, in fact, be skim. We spoke with Tammy Lakatos Shames and Lyssie Lakato, registered dietitian nutritionists and personal trainers with 15 years of experience helping thousands of clients, to find out their thoughts on the skim vs whole milk debate. Here’s what they had to say!

“When it comes to skim vs. whole milk, the answer is not as simple as once thought. For most Americans who get far too much saturated fat (and calories for that matter) choosing low-fat milk is what we recommend and is healthier for them. For someone who doesn’t get much saturated fat, having a little bit in milk won’t hurt them, and we’d say it’s ok to for them to have whole milk in their coffee if they prefer it. However, substituting those saturated fat calories with polynunsaturated fat (found in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds and fatty fish) provides a greater benefit because doing so actually reduces risk of heart disease. At this time, we recommend that most Americans choose low-fat milk and get their fat sources from the polyunsaturated fats to lower their risk of heart disease. However, if someone doesn’t [...]
